Haunted Mansion at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom: Everything You Need to Know

posted by Caitlin Lloyd on January 14, 2023 // last updated on January 15, 2023

Going to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is the perfect family trip, guaranteed to create lifelong memories.

With so much to see and do, it can be tricky to know what’s worth a visit ( and the wait times!), and what’s better to skip.

Parents may be wondering if the Haunted Mansion is appropriate for little ones, while adults may wish to know if it’s too childish and what accessibility is like.

This article will attempt to cover any questions you might have and tell you everything you need to know about the Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion for your upcoming trip!

What is the Haunted Mansion?

Where is the haunted mansion located, the haunted mansion experience: what to expect , accessibility , health and safety advisories , age and height restrictions, weight restrictions, when is the best time to visit the haunted mansion, a haunted mansion fun fact, the haunted mansion faqs, the bottom line on the haunted mansion.

The Haunted Mansion is a classic ride in Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park. Variations also exist at Disneyland and Disney Hong Kong.

After hopping into a ‘Doom Buggy’, guests will take a tour through the ghostly chambers of the Haunted Mansion. Riding through dark corridors, a show will unfold— using a mix of Disney Audio-Animatronics (robotics animation created by the Imagineers) and special effects.

While the ride itself may seem a little corny and mundane, the history behind Haunted Mansion is rich and full of Disney Imagineering magic!

Walt Disney came up with the idea for the Haunted Mansion before Disneyland was even built.

Originally planned for a site across from the studio (to be named ‘Mickey Mouse Park’), he had planned to construct a small town made up of select attractions before deciding to build the behemoth that became Disneyland.

The original setting for Haunted Mansion included a crooked road leading past a graveyard just off the main street. Above that, Walt planned to place the Haunted Mansion, looking down onto the town.

Harper Goff, a member of the LA artistic team at Walt Disney Studios, created the early concept art. Ken Anderson, an art director and writer, then developed the story, which was going to be placed in Disneyland’s then-planned New Orleans section.

However, Anderson’s plan for a horror-movie mansion wasn’t given the green light by Walt, who wasn’t a fan of having something so run down in his new, modern theme park.

Instead, inspired by the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, Anderson redesigned his story. This updated version had a murder-suicide, ghost wedding, and new family moving into the haunted mansion.

With a deadline of 1963, the attraction was announced in 1961 and construction began a year later. Although the exterior hit its deadline, the interior did not, as Walt was tied up with the New York World Fair.

Ken Anderson left the project in 1964 and, after Walt Disney’s death in 1966, progress stalled. Unsure what direction to go in and without Walt at the helm, it would be several more years before the attraction was completed.

The attraction finally opened in 1969 and featured the ‘Doom Buggies’—an Imagineer-created Omnimover system (a ride system that enabled guests to experience the attraction as if they were watching a movie). While the Imagineers working on the ride hadn’t been sure whether Haunted Mansion should be scary or fun, they eventually compromised and made it both!

While initially only at Disneyland, Disney World’s Magic Kingdom opened their own Haunted Mansion in 1971. The Orlando attraction had its first significant update in 2007 with new audio and visual effects, a new Endless Staircase scene, a more elaborate portrait transformation in the foyer, and replacement of some of the rubber spiders.

In 2011, the interactive queue was created, featuring tombstones and crypts to honor the original Imagineers.

In the queue, guests could solve a murder mystery about the Dread family, touch instruments to make them play variations of ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts’, watch ghosts writing invisible poems in floating books, and solve unfinished poems by speaking into the crypt microphone.

A further update in 2019 made the ride a PhotoPass attraction, adding a hidden camera to take photos of the riders at the final portrait. If wearing a Magic Band or Magic Band+ and using the My Disney Experience app, a black and white photograph of the guests surrounded by ghosts will automatically show up in the app!

the haunted mansion orlando

That’s not all: According to the Disney Parks Twitter , the Hatbox Ghost, a popular character from the Disneyland Haunted Mansion, will be installed in the Magic Kingdom’s Haunted Mansion in 2023.

Like so many Disney rides that have come before it, the Haunted Mansion was the inspiration for a major motion picture. A movie of the same name was released in 2003 and featured Eddie Murphy.

But that’s not where the magic ends for Haunted Mansion, as a new adaptation of ‘Haunted Mansion’ starring Rosario Dawson, LaKeith Stanfield, Owen Wilson, Tiffany Haddish, Winona Ryder, Dan Levy, Jared Leto, Danny DeVito, and Jamie Lee Curtis is scheduled to be released in August 2023.

With the success of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ and ‘Jungle Cruise’ franchises, it’s no wonder Walt Disney Studios keep making movies based on their classic rides.

Disney World’s Haunted Mansion is located in the Magic Kingdom within Liberty Square. You’ll also find other popular rides here, such as the Hall of Presidents and Liberty Square Riverboat.

Just past Sleepy Hollow snack stand and Hall of Presidents on your right, take the right at the fork towards Haunted Mansion (the left goes to Frontierland) and head up the hill.

Still not sure which way to go? Just follow the sounds of wolves howling!

the haunted mansion orlando

The Haunted Mansion is a relatively slow-paced ride on Doom Buggies through the mansion. You’ll encounter ghostly animatronics and special effects as you tour the dark estate.

The ride is considered mildly scary, though not gruesome, and it has many humorous elements.

More sensitive visitors may find it scary, but most adults and kids won’t have any trouble!

As guests enter through the carriage house, they’ll see the mansion off in the distance. From here, join the interactive queue, filled with tombstones with humorous inscriptions.

The interactive queue includes:

  • The Musical Crypt

A musical interactive experience (with some squirting water).

  • The Secret Library

A “whack-a-mole” style game with haunted books that will pop out of a bookcase and a tricky cryptogram.

  • Sepulcher of the Sea Captain

A leaky, singing tomb, which can spray you with water!

  • Tomb of the Posthumous Poetess

Help the deceased poet complete lines of poetry by speaking them into her tomb.

There’s even a fun murder mystery to solve using the busts of the Dread family!

If you don’t want to wait in line for ages, invest in the Disney Genie+ Service to access the Haunted Mansion Lightning Lane.

the haunted mansion orlando

Small groups load into the ‘Doom Buggie’, which has a small hard-seat bench with a high back.

Be sure to climb in carefully as the vehicle will be moving slowly, as will the platform you step off from (about 1 ft. high). A metal lap bar will automatically lower after you are seated.

Doom Buggies can fit two to three passengers, though three adults would be a squeeze. If riding as a three, two adults and a child will fit comfortably.

Once entering the mansion, you’ll start in a large room where you’ll be introduced to the story and your ghost host.

Through your journey through the mansion, your ghost host will lead the tour. Highlights include a conservatory filled with caskets, the séance room of Madame Leota, and a graveyard with singing ghosts.

The song you’ll hear throughout the ride is ‘Grim Grinning Ghosts’. The tempo will change based on the feel of the scene.

While the attraction starts out a little scary, as you make your way through it becomes more fun and sillier.

The Ride Time

The Haunted Mansion attraction consists of a pre-show, roughly three minutes long, followed by the ride which takes around seven to eight minutes.

The track Doom Buggies ride on is 960 ft. long and traverse forwards as well as backwards at times.

While the ride time itself isn’t particularly long, you should be aware that the queue generally takes around an hour to an hour and a half, especially from 10am onwards.

Guests in wheelchairs must be able to exit their wheelchairs and step into the Doom Buggy. The ride can be stopped so guests with mobility issues can have more time getting into the Doom Buggy.

Audio descriptions are available for the visually impaired through Disney Handheld Devices and closed captioning for the hearing impaired. For more information see the Disney World website .

the haunted mansion orlando

There are none for this ride! However, care should be taken with young children as they may be frightened by the themes or darkness.

The ride is slow moving, but there is a part where the Doom Buggy goes in reverse down an incline.

While there are no height restrictions, children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by someone who is 14 years or older.

There are no weight restrictions for this ride, although larger adults may need to have a Doom Buggy to themselves if they’re unable to fit two people.

the haunted mansion orlando

The Haunted Mansion is a popular ride in the Magic Kingdom, and an hour or more wait time is the norm. Therefore, it’s best to get in early or late when the park is less busy—before 11.30am or after 8pm.

Because of the theme, night is a fun time to go. Rides are available until 11pm.

The ride is transformed for the holidays between September and January into a ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’ theme. Overlays are added, and the story changes.

This is an enjoyable time to visit, but be aware that the ride closes down a couple of weeks before and after this event to set up and pack down.

If you are visiting around late August or January and plan on visiting the Haunted Mansion, check ahead to ensure you don’t miss out!

The Imagineers working on the original Haunted Mansion spooked the janitors by playing a prank on them.

Imagineer Rolly Crump recalled that after learning that the janitors were a little afraid of working in the dark, they set up a series of motion sensors which would activate the creepy attraction and shut the lights off.

The next morning, they found the janitors’ brooms on the floor and only a half-finished cleaning!

Is the Haunted Mansion at Disney actually scary?

The ride’s content is considered “mildly scary” as it contains ghosts and general spookiness. It’s also a dark ride, so children who are scared of the dark may want to skip it.

The story, however, is mixed with humor, which keeps the terror low.

Unlike with some other haunted houses, no one will jump out to give you a fright! However, some parents do report that teenagers will scream on the ride to be silly, and this may frighten young children more than the ride itself.

If the Stretching Room proves to be too scary, you can ask to skip this part of the attraction.

What is inside the Haunted Mansion at Disney World?

Inside the Haunted Mansion itself is the Stretching Room (where you are introduced to the ride) and the foyer. The rest of the ride is within a show building hidden behind the mansion.

What does the Haunted Mansion have to do with Disney?

The idea for the Haunted Mansion ride came from Walt Disney, who wanted the attraction in his planned first theme park ‘Mickey Mouse Park’, which ended up becoming Disneyland.

The Haunted Mansion has been a main attraction at Disneyland 1969 and in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom since 1971. A firm fan-favorite, it has a cult following.

How long is the Haunted Mansion ride?

The full ride is roughly nine minutes long. This includes the pre-show (two to three minutes) and the actual ride (seven to eight minutes).

What happens if it rains?

The ride is indoors, so rain won’t affect the attraction.

However, much of the queue is outside, so beware: You could end up standing in the rain for a while to get in! This may shorten the line, though, so it’s not all bad.

the haunted mansion orlando

The Haunted Mansion is an absolute Disney classic. It’s a nice mix of creepy and funny and suitable for all ages, whether or not you’re traveling with children.

If you or your children are sensitive to dark spaces or creepy themes, use your judgment if this will be appropriate.

If you use a wheelchair or ECV, it’s worth noting that you’ll need to be able to stand up from your wheelchair and step onto the Doom Buggy to be able to ride (or be with someone who can lift you).

Most people enjoy this ride without any issues. Just remember that planning the time you go or investing in the Disney Genie or Genie+ service is crucial— unless you want to spend an hour or longer in line!

The Haunted Mansion

An Attraction in Magic Kingdom

Last updated: December 30, 2023

At a Glance

Only slightly scarier than a whoopee cushion, The Haunted Mansion—which opened with the rest of Walt Disney World in 1971—proves that top-notch special effects don’t always require 21st-century technology. “Doom Buggies” on a conveyor belt transport you through the house from parlor to attic, then through a graveyard. The effects change tone with the setting: Those found in the house are generally spooky, while the graveyard effects, such as a ghostly opera singer wearing a Viking helmet, are for laughs. Some kids get anxious about what they think they’ll see, but almost nobody actually gets scared.

Eve Zibart, a veteran journalist and the author of several Unofficial Guide , ranks The Haunted Mansion as one of her favorite Disney attractions:

This is one of the best attractions in the Magic Kingdom. It's jam-packed with visual puns, special effects, hidden Mickeys, and really lovely Victorian-spooky sets. It's not scary, except in the sweetest of ways, but it will remind you of the days before ghost stories gave way to slasher flicks.

A Temple, Texas, mom isn't convinced:

You say the actual sights are not really frightening. What isn't frightening about a hanging corpse, a coffin escapee, and an axe-welding skeleton bride?

A mom from Victoria, British Columbia, wishes teens would shut their pieholes:

My 4-year-old daughter loved Space Mountain, but The Haunted Mansion really scared her. Our experience was that teenagers deliberately scream and pretend to be scared on this ride. This scares the crap out of the little ones.

Interactive elements in the left side of the outdoor queue ensure that guests have something to occupy them when lines are long. Features include a music-playing monument and a ship captain’s tomb that squirts water.

Touring Tips

Lines here ebb and flow more than those at most other Magic Kingdom hot spots because the Mansion is near The Hall of Presidents and the Liberty Belle Riverboat . These two attractions disgorge hundreds of guests when each show or ride ends, and many of these folks head straight for the Mansion. If you can’t go before 11:30 a.m. or in the last 2 hours the park is open, try to slip in around dinner.

When admitted to the Mansion, you’ll first enter a foyer with a fireplace, then be guided quickly into a second preshow room with wood paneling, and four paintings above you. Keeping close to the wall, find the wall panel with a small, red light at about eye level, and stand with your back to that panel while you watch the preshow.

Most Haunted Places in Orlando, FL

When you think of Orlando it is likely that your initial thoughts turn to places like Disney World and Universal Studios. However, there is so much more to Orlando than its various theme parks. What about the site of the Ted Bundy murder trial, the former hotel with a demonic force in its underground tunnel or the motel where a ghost will share your bed?

Join us as we explore the top 11 most haunted places in Orlando, FL:

11 – Princeton Hospital (Lakeside Hospital)

Princeton Hospital was renamed Lakeside Hospital in 2000 but regardless of the name that it is known by, the fact remains that this is one of the most haunted places in Orlando.

This spooky psychiatric hospital is said to be haunted by the spirits of patients, doctors and nurses who have not only been seen as apparitions, but have also been known to move things around.

There are few sights more disturbing than an empty wheelchair being pushed down a corridor by unseen hands!

One frequently encountered spook is said to be a patient with hollow eyes who is often seen staring at staff. There is some debate over whether he is sad or angry!

The second and third floors of the hospital are said to be the hotspots for paranormal activity with people reporting hearing unexplained knocking, disembodied moans and voices, lights turning on and off and many other strange occurrences.

10 - Super 8 International Drive BOOK A ROOM

Super 8 International Drive

The idea of a creepy roadside motel may be a bit of a horror movie cliché, but it is certainly one that the Super 8 International Drive lives up to! In particular, room number 206 is said to be the stuff of nightmares!

When you make your bed there is a very strong possibility that soon after you will see the imprint of a human body appearing in the sheets even although nobody has laid down on the bed since it was made up!

Various guests have also claimed that they have awoken to feel somebody else in bed beside them and others say they are woken up when the bed starts to shake violently.

The room is usually icy cold even when the air conditioning has been shut off, it just seems to be impossible to heat!

This is without a doubt one of the most haunted places in Orlando!

9 - Hamburger Mary's

Hamburger Mary's

A haunted burger joint is certainly an unusual one, but Hamburger Mary’s bar and grill was not always an eating place. In the past it was also a hardware store, so perhaps that is where the tales of a little girl in Victorian clothing originate?

Staff claim that they often see the little girl in the restaurant and also skipping down the pavement outside. She is also known to knock on the doors and the walls of the property.

8 - Ceviche

Ceviche

Popular Orlando restaurant Ceviche has previously served as both a hotel and a church, and it is now considered to be one of the most haunted spots in the city.

Visitors to the restaurant have been reporting spooky occurrences ever since Ceviche first opened for business with most of them reporting seeing a 19 th century woman standing close to the antique mirror that hangs in the bar.

Others say that they have experienced unseen hands pulling at their clothes and there is also said to be a ghostly priest lingering here too.

7 - Rogers Building

Rogers Building

Rogers Building is a one time gentlemen’s club which is named after Gordon Rogers. His wife was not too happy about her husband’s choice of business!

It seems that despite this failure to see eye to eye over the purpose of the building, Gordon and his wife both developed a bit of an affection for this building, because neither one of them seems to have left following their deaths.

Apparitions of them both have been seen in various parts of the building, but most commonly either looking out of the second floor window, or drifting around in the art gallery on the first floor.

6 - Angebilt Hotel

Angebilt Hotel

The Angebilt Hotel is one of the tallest buildings in Orlando and has been a major landmark in the city since it first opened in the 1920s. It is also considered to be one of the most haunted places in Orlando.

It was once an extremely grand location, but from the 1970s onwards it declined and by the 1990s it had been converted into a temporary courthouse. These days it is largely office space with some restaurants on the ground floor, but there is a lingering presence leftover from its previous life.

The majority of the paranormal activity that is reported here seems to occur in the underground tunnel that runs underneath the Angelbilt. Witnesses have seen apparitions and recorded EVP there and many say they feel that the presence is demonic.

5 - Wall Street & Court Avenue

Wall Street & Court Avenue

The current owners of this property have said that there is no paranormal activity, but many believe that they may simply be downplaying the stories in order to avoid what they believe is the wrong type of attention.

However, back when this was the Kit Kat Club staff would often report that bottles would fly off of the shelves on their own! This was by no means the only strange thing that was going on, and other people have reported strange experiences in the ladies bathroom.

On a number of occasions, a female apparition in a black dress has bee spotted on the rear staircase blocking people from going up.

Some have suggested that the hauntings can be linked to the fact that there was once a jail in this location many years ago.

4 - Greenwood Cemetery

Greenwood Cemetery

Orlando’s Greenwood Cemetery sprawls across over 100 acres and is home to the last Earthly remains of some of Orlando’s most prominent families. It comes as no surprise that such a place would be haunted.

One of the most well known spooks in residence at Greenwood Cemetery is the ghost of Fred Weeks who has been spotted on a number of occasions lurking just outside of his mausoleum.

There are sections of the cemetery which are rather chillingly named ‘Baby Land 1’, ‘Baby Land 2’ and so on. This is where children from the nearby Sunland Hospital (which we will talk about shortly)  are buried.

Some say that they have heard the disembodied sound of children’s laughter and the unexplained sound of a music box playing in these areas.

3 - Lake Lucerne

Lake Lucerne

At face value, Lake Lucerne seems to be a peaceful spot in down town Orlando, but appearances can be deceiving and this is actually one of the most haunted places in Orlando.

It is said to be haunted by the Lady in White, a female spirit dressed all in white who appears by an old oak tree on the Southern shore of the lake.

2 - Sunland Hospital

Sunland Hospital

Sunland Hospital in Orlando was initially built to serve as a tuberculosis hospital, but it was later re-purposed as the Sunland Training Center for Retarded Children.

Over the years that it was in operation, there were numerous allegations of abuse, neglect and health code violations.

The hospital was torn down in 1999 and only the old administration block remains. The property is now a park, but it seems as though many of the former patients are still lingering here.

There are often reports of disembodied children’s laughter, strange light anomalies and the swings and other playground apparatus moving by itself as though the children who died in the hospital are still here playing.

1 - Orange County Regional History Center

Orange County Regional History Center

If you are interested in learning all about the history of Orange County and how this Florida county went from being a renowned orange growing region to the world’s theme park mecca then Orange County Regional History Center is the perfect place to visit.

Here you can also learn about one of America’s most prolific serial killers, Ted Bundy. The building dates back to 1927 and it was the location of Bundy’s murder trial in 1979.

Some say that this is why the building is now considered to be one of the most haunted places in Orlando.

Some of the paranormal activity that has been reported here includes items in the museum moving on their own and even levitating.

There have also been a handful of sightings of an apparition that resembles Ted Bundy himself!

Disney Treasure hull comes together in cruise ship construction milestone

Posted: December 15, 2023 | Last updated: December 15, 2023

Disney Cruise Line’s next new ship actually looks like a ship as the final block of the Disney Treasure hull has been put into place.

“This means that the ship is now structurally complete and outfitting work can begin,” according to a post on the Disney Parks blog.

The ship that had its keel laying ceremony in March continues construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, ahead of its completion in late 2024.

Disney Cruise Line queues up old and new features for new ship Disney Treasure

The second of three sister ships following 2022’s debut of the Disney Wish, Disney Treasure will also sail from Port Canaveral beginning  Dec. 21, 2024, sailing alternating eastern and western Caribbean itineraries.

That gives teams less than a year to get the interior spaces and other features complete.

Among spaces coming to the 144,000-gross-ton, 4,000-passenger vessel include bars inspired by the Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea theme park attractions and an Aladdin-themed Grand Hall atrium.

Haunted Mansion bar is coming to Disney’s new cruise ship

The popular Oceaneer’s Club aimed at children ages 3-12 will have the same five venues seen on Disney Wish for Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Imagineers, Disney Princesses and Mickey and Minnie.

Its top deck will once again feature the AquaMouse water coaster-dark ride combo while the rotational dining will bring back a new version of the Worlds of Marvel restaurant and the California cuisine venue 1923 named in deference to the opening year for Walt Disney’s animation studio. The ship will also have higher-end dining at the “Beauty and the Beast”-themed Palo Steakhouse and Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement as well as their shared cocktail lounge The Rose,

Disney Cruise Line taps ‘Moana’ for original show on Disney Treasure

New to the ship is a dinner theater experience based on the Disney Pixar movie “Coco,” a new dessert venue themed to “Zootopia,” and a pair of coffee, tea and snack options: Heihei Café, named after the rooster from the film “Moana,” and Jade Cricket Café, named after the cricket from the film “Mulan.”

One other revamped venue will be called Sarabi, taking the same space and role as Luna on Disney Wish. Themed to “The Lion King,” the two-deck venue acts as a family fun theater during the day and adult entertainment at night.

The main stage will feature a new show based on “Moana” as well as existing shows for “Beauty and the Beast” and the play “Disney Seas the Day” that debuted on Disney Wish.

Disney Treasure’s arrival will grow the DCL fleet to six ships with two more in the works.

A third Wish-class ship that has yet to be named is due in 2025 along with another ship under construction that will be based in Asia named the Disney Adventure.

Moscow’s 9 most unusual houses

Ship House. 2, Bolshaya Tulskaya Str. // Built in 1981 by the USSR Ministry of Atomic Industry, this is one of the few buildings in Moscow that can withstand a nuclear explosion. The foreman who oversaw its construction spent his entire life building only nuclear reactors, which left its mark on this house. To prevent it from “folding up” in the event of an explosion, there are no 90° angles in this seismically stable house — only 87° or 93°; the thickness of the glass panes is a unique 0.23 inches. It is called the “Ship” because of its huge size (1312 feet long, 164 feet high) and encircling balconies that resemble decks.

Egg House. 1/11 Mashkova Str. // Moscow has always been famous for its crankiness and sweeping gestures, including architecture. One of the most striking and outrageous examples is the “Egg House”. Originally planned to be built in Bethlehem as a maternity ward, it was eventually put up in Moscow. Outwardly, it resembles a giant copy of a Fabergé egg. It is the only such house in the world.

Arseny Morozov Mansion (Reception House of the Russian Government), 16 Vozdvizhenka // This house was built in 1899 by order of young millionaire, dandy, and merchant family heir Arseny Morozov on a plot of land given to him by his mother on his 25th birthday. Even at the construction stage, the house, which was executed in a Moorish style unprecedented for Moscow, became the butt of ridicule and criticism. When it was finished, legend has it that his vexed mother’s words were: “Only I used to know that you’re a fool, now the whole of Moscow will know!”

Nautilus Trade Center, 25 Nikolskaya Str. // In the early 2000s, this mall became Moscow's new “Morozov Mansion” — lambasted by everyone for its vulgarity. The pretentious postmodern architecture seems to jut out of an edifice on one of Moscow’s oldest streets, but the place once sited the Vladimir Gates of the Kitai-Gorod Wall and the Chapel of St. Panteleimon — buildings that were also rich in gaudy architectural details. Furthermore, the region was always a hotbed of commerce, for which reason a shopping center is quite apropos. Who knows, maybe in future Nautilus — like Morozov’s house before it — will become a feature of classic Moscow architecture.

Copper House, 3 Butikovsky Lane. // Built within the “Golden Mile,” historically the most expensive area of Moscow, this three-block residential house of 20 apartments was admitted to the Moscow Museum of Architecture’s collection of finest buildings in 2003-2004. It is faced with prepatinated copper plates and is one of the most expensive blocks in Moscow.

Stolnik House, 5 Maly Levshinskiy Lane. // Stolnik stands among the old lanes of Arbat Street, still home to places where Pushkin once resided. This residential house made of glass and metal literally explodes the architectural environment. However, there is something vaguely classical about it, namely the three-part symmetric layout and “Corinthian column” motif.

Kitezh Business Center, 3-7 Kievskaya Str. // This business center resembles the Titanic. The unique shape is the result of the complex internal structure — many of the shafts and stairwells are inclined and curved. Such a project would be beyond many architects, but Dmitry Bush has been building stadiums and ice rinks in Russia for many years.

Melnikov House, 10 Krivoarbatsky Lane. // This single-unit house, built by the great Soviet avant-garde architect Konstantin Melnikov for his family, is today an architectural monument of national significance. It is unique for its shape — two intersecting cylinders each truncated by a third of its radius — and its hexagonal window apertures encircling the entire circumference of the building. There are 60 windows in total, while the apertures in the walls number more than 130 — all stuffed with brick and construction debris (not a single wheelbarrow of waste was removed from the site!), but able to be unblocked to create a new window anywhere in the walls. Melnikov placed such windows in all the walls so that his hand never overshadowed a blueprint in his studio. The internal area of the house is very modest — a mere 2691 ft². Melnikov’s descendants live here to this day.

Department for Brain Research of the Neurology Center under the Russian Academy of Sciences, 5-7 Obukha Lane. // Built in 1914 in the era of art nouveau, this building is a former Evangelical hospital for the poor. In Soviet times, it housed the Brain Institute, which primarily studied the brains of prominent (and deceased) state and public figures: Lenin, Mayakovsky, Landau, Sakharov, Michurin, Gorky, and others. Of all the houses in Moscow, this building most resembles a gloomy castle from a gothic novel or vampire legend, especially in overcast weather.
