Viking Yachts 54 Convertible Review

Viking Yachts team members are boatbuilders and hardcore big-game anglers. Their experience imbues the Viking 54 Convertible.

The 54C has the builder’s signature sloping and straight sheer, reaching from 6 feet, 8 inches of freeboard forward to 2 feet, 11 inches of freeboard aft—and making the endgame release or gaff shot safe and easy on the crew. Hullside vents, a raked stem with generous flare, and a blacked-out wraparound forward window are other Viking trademarks in the 54C’s aesthetic.

What you can’t see, but can feel, is the hull’s performance across the water. Viking tweaked the hull form with double chines and refined prop pockets, as well as adjusted the size and length of the strakes to improve overall ride and performance. Engineers and designers used computational fluid dynamics to run virtual sea trials and adjust the vessel’s hull bottom, understand trim angles and efficiencies, and analyze pressure distribution across the wetted surfaces. The data, they say, helped make the boat faster, safer and more comfortable.

Fishermen know that a day staring at lines or working kites and floats can be tiresome. There is mezzanine seating a level above the cockpit that provides a respite and perch for those on watch, or for guests to watch a fish fight. A freezer and insulated stowage are under the seats. A tackle cabinet is to starboard. The 54C’s flybridge overhang is extended for shade, but the captain’s view from either the flybridge or tuna tower remains clear.

The vessel’s cockpit has a sizable 154 square feet of dance floor. There are no latches, handles or obstructions to snag on while doing double duty on a line. Nonslip or teak decking provide solid footing. Bait is kept in the transom livewell. A laminated backing plate is installed during construction for an optional fighting chair, leaning post or table. The starboard-side in-deck fish box is a single unit long enough to hold that bigeye-tuna wolf pack, and the portside fish box can be split into two sections, with one serving as an additional livewell. All fish boxes have rubber gaskets for a solid seal when closed.

For all the fishing focus on the outside, Viking created yacht-level luxury inside this three-stateroom, two-head sport-fisherman. Just inside the salon, an L-shaped settee with a teak table is to port for casual lounging or stretching out. Forward is the U-shaped galley. The after end of the galley peninsula is cut on a diagonal, allowing room for two fixed stools while keeping them outside the flow of traffic. Across and to starboard is a high-gloss dinette with curved seating. Adding to the open feel in the salon are side and aft windows, as well as 6-foot-4-inch headroom.

For the traveling tournament crew, the galley is set up for a season of self-sufficient meal prep with four Sub-Zero fridge-freezer drawers, an in-cabinet Samsung microwave, a Miele four-burner electric cooktop, a stainless-steel sink, and several cabinets above and below. Viking numbers each cabinet component, so if a piece like a door is damaged, the yard can replace it with an exact match, wood grain and all.

A dark-walnut Amtico sole in the galley is durable and makes for easy maintenance. Argento-style PentalQuartz countertops and a Soho Studio metal mosaic backsplash create a contemporary feel. To accent the high-gloss teak cabinets, Viking offers several interior-decor packages, including Majilite headliner panels, fabric filler in the window mullions, and flybridge cushions.

Belowdecks, the master stateroom is amidships and to port with a walk-around queen berth, credenza, hanging locker, underberth stowage and a 32-inch high-definition TV. The en suite head has a fiberglass stall shower with an integrated seat and stowage cabinet. I got aboard Hull No. 1, and it had the optional over-under crossover berth in the forward VIP. The standard layout is a single centerline queen berth. The VIP and starboard twin-bunk staterooms share a head, which has a shower stall.

Up top, the flybridge helm console has room for two 21-inch Garmin multifunction displays and a row of Bocatech switches, creating a streamlined glass bridge. Side helm boxes house VHF radios, a Seakeeper 9 display, a FLIR controller, a Garmin mouse pad and more. Overhead is an electronics console with flush-mounted MAN engine displays, an additional Garmin screen and room for more electronics. Forward of the helm console is a lounge seat with armrests, as well as port and starboard lounge seats with forward-facing backrests. Stowage is under all the seats.

Geared for the owner-operator and with room for the fishing family or tournament team, the Viking 54 Convertible is a 40-plus-knot fish-chaser built by anglers for anglers.

Viking 54 | Boat Review

All new Vikings benefit from previous models, due mostly in part to the company’s mantra to build a better boat every day, as well as a substantial workforce in its design, manufacturing and fishing teams. Owner and dealer feedback ­contribute the input necessary to ­accumulate all the knowledge that adds up, checking every box for the boat’s purpose. This commitment is easily explained by company president Pat Healey: “We are not smarter; we just work harder at getting the job done right.” From bow to stern, the fruits of collaborated effort are both clear and obvious.

Textbook examples of smart design and function, the 54′s cockpit offers 154 square feet in place to fish: flush-mounted rod holders, a transom door with lift gate, and rounded coaming. A subtle crown in the transom easily pushes away the wash when backing up at 7 knots.

Hull No. 1 has been set up for South Florida’s winter sailfish season and serves as an HMY Yacht Sales’ demo boat, with captain and company sales associate Trey Claus at the helm. This boat is designed to carry hundreds of frisky live baits. Along with the pressurized transom livewell and a pair of integral ports for a dual GlassTech livewell system, additional plumbing supplies two more on-deck livewells that drain through threaded scuppers at the transom corners. As part of the boat’s custom touches, Claus added a few inches to the rocket launcher’s pedestal to accommodate the height of his anglers. Flanking the rocket launcher is a full-size fish box and storage compartments that double as a hopper for the Dometic ice chipper. A lazarette hatch lifts to access the Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer, plumbing, steering and other systems. And built into the mezzanine deck are bait freezers, three chiller boxes, a tackle locker and engine-room access.

Engine Room

As with any Viking, ­attention to detail is a hallmark, affording 5 feet, 8 inches of headroom in the entryway and continues to the front of the MAN V-12 CRM 1,550 hp diesel engines. The absence of clutter is apparent, even with the air-conditioning and watermaker pumps that are located inboard of each engine. Outboard you’ll find the batteries ­enveloped in fiberglass boxes, climate-control ­systems, steering pump, ASEA power transformers, and a Bluewater Legend desalinator; Delta-T ventilation and fire-suppression units are located on the hullsides. The freshwater manifold system, forward bilge and fuel-transfer pumps are hatch-protected forward of the engines.

The optional three-­fuel-tank configuration was engineered to allow the ­installation of a Furuno ­full-circle scanning-sonar tube. The generator sits aft of the port engine, with room to add a second behind the starboard main engine. Snow White Awlgrip helps illuminate the bright engine room, and in true Viking fashion, chafing gear for hoses and electrical runs is provided, and labeled fittings and ­equipment are abundant.

Four interior wood options are available—teak or walnut, in gloss or satin finishes—with this 54 being dressed in stunning ­high-gloss walnut. The forward stateroom arrangement can ­accommodate either a queen berth as standard, or with crossover berths. In the portside master, a queen bed with lift-up ­storage is flanked by nightstands and ­credenzas, as well as a maple-lined hanging locker. The en suite head offers engineered stone counters and a notably large fiberglass shower stall with a glass door.

Upper and lower berths outfit the starboard stateroom, with the upper berth measuring a sizable 33 inches wide. The lower berth is narrower at 27 inches, but both extend to 6 feet, 3 inches. A second head separates the starboard stateroom from the forward stateroom—each with private access, in addition to a companionway entrance for day use.

Three distinct ­gathering areas in the salon are equally inviting, in part due to the boat’s nearly 18-foot beam. The L-shaped sofa to port is accented with a high-low Mappa burl cocktail table. The portside peninsula galley is topped with engineered stone, and an offset overhang accommodates a pair of upholstered bar stools.

Amtico custom vinyl flooring, Sub-Zero undercounter refrigerator/freezer units, a cooktop, microwave/convection oven and plenty of storage meld convenience, comfort and practicality for offshore life.

Flybridge and Tower

This 54-footer sports a number of changes to its familiar center-console-style helm station. In lieu of being recessed behind lift-up acrylic panels, Atlantic Marine Electronics installed a pair of Garmin 8622 multifunction displays flush-mounted in a raised helm. Below the MFDs, a bank of stainless-steel Bocatech solid-state, resettable push-button waterproof switches activates the ship’s systems at the touch of a finger—from ignitions to bilge pumps to fuel transfer. On either side of the teak helm pod, fiberglass compartments with split lids house other assorted controls. A recess in the fiberglass hardtop accommodates the MAN instrumentation, autopilot and other navigation tools. A pair of teaser reels are also recessed in the hardtop, complete with remote ­controls for the tower.

Helm visibility is superb, with lounges on each side; a drink-box cooler, additional forward seating, and a pair of Release Marine helm chairs also adorn the bridge.

The Palm Beach Towers 6-foot-gap tuna tower in brushed aluminum is outfitted with a 63-inch control box to house the electronics, steering and engine controls. An upgraded forward X-brace, side diagonals, and hardtop brace add the contour and style to complement the 54′s sleek profile.

Performance and Construction

The Viking 54 is offered standard with two MAN V-12 1400 CRMs or, as in this test boat, optional MAN V-12 1550 CRMs. A strong torque curve is apparent; we saw 42 knots on a wide-open-throttle run at 2,330 rpm, with the MANs drinking 160 gph. At 1,830 rpm, the boat slides along at 31.5 knots, and an additional 50 turns pushes her to 32.6 knots.

The wake slices paths of clean water for good bait presentation, and the hull and running surface are designed using a series of computational fluid dynamic programs to run virtual sea trials that help determine the best performance and most effective use of power and trim. The hull structure is a composite of coring materials and fiberglass with vinylester resin infusion. Reinforced with structural composite bulkheads and integrated fiberglass fuel, water and waste tankage, the engineering consistencies deliver a tournament contender in true Viking style—which is hardly a surprise.

Viking Tradition The Viking 54 sets new milestones of innovation while integrating ideas garnered from sales and owner feedback, as well as thousands of hours logged by our Viking demo teams on the tournament trail. “We’re in a constant state of refinement,” says Viking Design Manager David Wilson. “Everything from interior and exterior design and accommodations to performance, fishability and ease of operation are evolving.”

The 54 presents an eye-pleasing profile that’s unmistakably Viking, with signature design traits such as a gently sloping unbroken S-shaped sheer, aggressively raked stem, double chines, hull-side vents and deftly placed exterior feature lines.

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, the Viking Design and Engineering Department has optimized the 54’s running surface for maximum performance. Now an integral part of the design process, our in-house CFD allows us to run numerous virtual sea trials to fine-tune the shape of the hull bottom for increased efficiency. The hull is built with an engineered composite of fiberglass fabrics and coring that’s vacuum-infused with vinylester resin.

Business End The Viking 54’s business end offers more space than any other boat in its class. The 154-square-foot unobstructed cockpit comes to the fishing wars with the ammunition to put you in the winner’s circle, starting with molded non-skid on the cockpit sole for grippy footing (even when wet) and large scuppers to drain water quickly.

A walk-through transom door with a lift gate takes the work out of boating a trophy catch. And when you’re release-fishing, a three-foot reach to the waterline means you can quickly turn a billfish loose. Anglers will appreciate Viking’s signature rounded cockpit coamings and toekick for those lengthy stand-up battles. Flush rod holders, recessed stainless-steel hawse pipes and cleats keep the cockpit clear.

Multiple insulated fishboxes of various capacities increase flexibility. The raised transom box can be used as a live well, fishbox or general storage. A full-length in-deck fishbox spans the starboard side, while the port side holds two storage compartments with the forward serving as an optional live well. A mounting plate laminated into the sole will anchor the mightiest of fighting chairs, and you can also opt for a rocket launcher or table. A single centerline lazarette hatch (available with power actuation) opens nearly 90 degrees for full viewability and access to the available Seakeeper as well as the steering, trim tabs and drain pumps.

Guests will be enamored with the raised observation mezzanine (pioneered by Viking) as they watch the action in comfort, shaded by the flybridge overhang. Smart storage solutions abound, with freezer and cooler space under the mezzanine for baits and drinks and a tackle cabinet on the starboard side. The inboard portion of the mezzanine provides access to the engineroom. An anodized aluminum ladder with nonslip treads (and a handrail at the top) provides secure egress to the flybridge.

View from Above A streamlined walk-around center console provides 360-degree sightlines. Touchscreen electronics displays and a row of Bocatech switches with power status LED rings are flush mounted in the helm dash. Their installation and positioning heighten viewability and ease of access.

A stainless steel steering wheel and single-lever electronic controls are mounted on a raised teak helm pod. Optimus Electronic Power Steering delivers precise maneuverability and finger-tip control. The console itself is designed with toekick all around for better balance and increased walking area. The helm and companion chair (with teak ladder backs) supply ample comfort for those long rides to the canyons, and guests can take it easy in the port or starboard lounges (with forward-facing backrests) or forward console seat.

The Viking 54 can be outfitted with a custom designed and fabricated Palm Beach Towers tuna tower and equipped with navigation, communication and entertainment systems from Atlantic Marine Electronics. These two Viking subsidiaries play critical roles in making our yachts turnkey ready.

Interior Delights Making full use of the 17’8” beam, the Viking 54 layout accentuates the impressive size of her interior. The key to the configuration is the uninterrupted companionway that stretches from the starboard-side salon door all the way to the forepeak. The lounge area and galley are to port, while the dinette is to starboard.

High-gloss teak or walnut is offered for the 54’s interior, and a satin finish is optional. Premium wall-to-wall carpeting and furnishings can be found throughout the climate-controlled living area. Air conditioning flows quietly from valances for comfortable cooling and thorough distribution. A hi-lo mappa burl cocktail table joins the L-shaped lounge with storage below.

A 49” HD TV is nested on the forward starboard bulkhead above the dinette, which is appointed with a high-gloss mappa burl table and wraparound seating for four. The galley’s peninsula countertop features engineered stone with an overhang and two convenient bar stools. The galley is feature-packed with a pair of under-counter Sub-Zero refrigerator/freezer units and storage under the peninsula counter. The opposite counter is home to a stainless steel sink with garbage disposal and an electric cooktop.

Comfort Zones The three-stateroom two-head layout includes a master suite to port with a walk-around queen berth sided by night stands and a credenza to port. There’s a large maple-lined storage area beneath the mattress, accessed via a gas piston-assisted lift-up top, and two drawers are integrated into the foot of the bed. A 32-inch HD TV is mounted above a second credenza. A generously proportioned maple-lined hanging locker accommodates a sizeable wardrobe.

The forward stateroom comes standard with a queen berth, but also is available with a crossover berth arrangement. Both plans offer plenty of storage along with a 32” HD TV. The starboard stateroom has upper and lower berths along with a hanging locker and storage under the lower berth. Each stateroom is fully carpeted, with dedicated temperature and stereo controls, speakers and overhead LED lighting.

The heads feature custom Amtico flooring, a lower vanity, a medicine cabinet with mirrored doors, exhaust fans, air conditioning and electric heads with holding tank and overboard discharge capabilities. Both also boast very large walk-in one-piece fiberglass showers with an expansive glass enclosure and door. Below the detachable shower head, you’ll find a convenient storage cabinet as well as an integrated fiberglass seat.

Engineering Driven The optional MAN V12 1550CRM (1550 MHP) diesels power hull No. 1. With this propulsion package, the Viking 54 Convertible will have an estimated cruise speed in the mid-30-knot range with a top end of 40-plus knots depending upon load, sea state and boat condition. A pair of MAN V12 1400CRM (1440 MHP) diesels are standard. All mechanicals and equipment are installed with great attention to detail in an immaculate engineroom painted with Snow White Awlgrip for visibility and ease of maintenance.

The lofty fiberglass flybridge on the Viking 54C features a central, walk-around helm station with a touchscreen navigation and instrumentation panel courtesy of Atlantic Marine Electronics, Optimus Electronic Power Steering, Garmin radar and bow thrusters for all of the nimble control you need to chase large pelagic fish. On the main deck the aft-cockpit is larger than any you will see on a yacht of this class, offering 154-square feet of dedicated fishing space. Lined in waterproof teak, the cockpit features a transom door with lift gate, multi-functional live-well fish boxes, rod storage, tackle stowage, side panels, steel hose pipes, an Eskimo ice-chipper and a floor plate for fighting chairs and rocket launchers. Should you need a rest from catching all those billfish, then worry not, as the cockpit also hosts a mezzanine lounge sofa with room for three guests.

Lavish internal spaces on the 54C abound with plenty of glazed or satin-finished teak or walnut surfaces, furnishings in hand-stitched upholstery or leather and recessed mood lighting. Wrap-around windows illuminate a large salon with a port-side L-shaped sofa, a starboard dining sofa with a breakfast table and plenty of cabinet space. Positioned amidship you will also find a walk-in galley kitchen with marble-effect Corian worktops, a serving bar, a two-zone hob, a combination oven, a fridge and a large sink. Steps down to the lower level reveal a set of luxurious retreats with overnight accommodation for up to 5 guests. There is a VIP guest room to the bow with a double bed, a starboard single cabin with an en suite Jack-and-Jill shower room, and a master stateroom at the rear with a queen-sized island bed, maple-lined closets and a private en suite bathroom. There are very few sportfish builders that have designed as comfortable interiors as Viking Yachts has done time and time again.

Top speeds well in excess of 40 knots come courtesy of two MAN V12 1550MHP diesel engines, with cruising speeds clocking in at around 34 knots. A hull that was fine-tuned through dozens of Atlantic Sea trails boasts an aggressively raked stem, double chines, side venting and vacuum-infused composite fiberglass for a dry ride, superb lift and peerless balance, while a fuel tank holding 1,535 gallons of diesel will keep the Viking 54C out at sea for days on end.

Companionway

Moving forward down the companionway, the washer/dryer are located to starboard. The stacked front loading units are hidden behind a companionway door. A central vacuum outlet is in the steps. A canvas runner protects the carpet and steps.

Forward Stateroom

The forward stateroom is Viking's VIP crossover layout for maximum versatility. The double bed down offers plenty of room for a couple and the single up comes in handy for a child. Or, if two anglers need to share the room. This layout offers more cabinet storage and has floor space to get dressed and tie shoes. This stateroom has a private door to the guest head.
